This study investigates the relationship between technology access and academic performance across geographic contexts. Findings reveal that rural students face compound disadvantages characterized by limited infrastructure, lower internet connectivity, and reduced digital resources compared to urban counterparts (Marshall & Moore, 2020). The relationship between technology access and academic outcomes is complex and moderated by teacher digital competence, community engagement, and infrastructure reliability (Unknown, 2024). Addressing this divide requires comprehensive interventions beyond hardware provision, encompassing teacher training, sustainable infrastructure, and community support (Siordia Portela et al., 2026).

The digital divide represents one of the most persistent barriers to educational equity in the 21st century, manifesting as a significant disparity in technology access between rural and urban school communities. This study investigates the relationship between access to technology and academic performance in rural versus urban schools, examining how differential access to digital resources shapes educational outcomes. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of recent literature from 2020 to 2026, this research synthesizes findings from multiple international contexts, including Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Peru, Vietnam, the United States, China, and Zambia. The investigation reveals that rural schools face compound disadvantages characterized by limited infrastructure, lower socioeconomic resources, and reduced internet connectivity, which collectively contribute to measurable academic performance gaps. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, analyzing quantitative data on technology access indicators and academic performance metrics alongside qualitative insights from teachers and education stakeholders. Findings indicate that while technology access significantly correlates with academic outcomes in urban settings, the relationship in rural contexts is moderated by factors including teacher digital competence, community engagement, and infrastructure reliability. The research concludes with policy recommendations emphasizing the need for holistic interventions that address access, teacher training, and sustainable infrastructure development to bridge the digital divide and promote educational equity.
